The Word 'Robot' Was Born on a Stage, Not in a Lab

Before it meant a machine, 'robot' meant forced labor — a Czech word for serfdom that a playwright's brother repurposed for a 1920 science-fiction play.

No engineer coined the word “robot.” A painter did, for his brother’s play, borrowing a word that used to describe the grinding labor owed by serfs to their landlords.

Czech writer Karel Čapek needed a name for the artificial workers in his new play, Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti (“Rossum’s Universal Robots”), first performed in Prague in 1921. His original idea was labori, from the Latin for labor — but he thought it sounded too bookish. He turned to his brother Josef, a painter, who suggested roboti, built on the existing Czech word robota.

Robota didn’t mean “machine” or “worker” — it meant the compulsory, unpaid labor that serfs in Central Europe owed to their lords, a system that had only been abolished in the Habsburg lands within living memory of the play’s premiere. Čapek’s “roboti” in the play aren’t sleek machines; they’re artificial biological workers, grown rather than built, created specifically to do the drudgery humans no longer wanted to do — and, being a 1920s cautionary play, they eventually rebel.

From serfdom to science fiction to your vacuum

The play was translated quickly and widely, and English absorbed “robot” almost immediately, stripped of its Czech baggage. Within a decade it had drifted entirely away from “forced labor” and settled into the meaning we use now: an artificial, usually mechanical, worker. Isaac Asimov’s robot stories in the 1940s cemented the word in English so completely that most speakers today have no idea it once meant serfdom rather than steel.

The pattern behind it

This is a common path for technology words: they rarely start out describing the technology itself. They get borrowed from whatever concept the invention is replacing — in this case, forced human labor. The machine changes; the word for the labor it does often survives the transition.
